We get a lot of resistance to taking on a contractor.
- They will pick up all your good ideas and take them somewhere else
- You have to spend too long training them
- They threaten the existing team
- They cost so much more than a permanent person
There is an element of risk in bringing any new person into the business, and contractors know how to reassure you that they are contractors, not someone looking for ideas to steal - they will be bringing good ideas with them. An experienced financial reporting accountant will know what to do and you may find that they leave some training behind with your own team. In our observation the existing team are normally grateful to have another pair of hands to help.
Contractors would like to earn more per hour to make up for the lack of holiday pay and sick leave, but the truth is that their hourly rate is calculated on their market value as a permanent employee. We will charge you a margin (up to a maximum of $10 per hour for the more senior people) as we will be taking the risk and associated costs of employing the person away from you.
We will not stop looking for the perfect permanent member of your team – a contractor is a short term solution to an urgent need or a project requirement. Have another look at that list of goals you set at the beginning of the year. Wouldn’t more resources be nice?
